Continuing professional development

Continuing professional development (CPD) is the maintenance and enhancement of knowledge, expertise and competence of professionals throughout their careers according to a formulated plan with regards to the needs of the professional, the employer, the profession and society and is and is identifiably linked to the context of your work and/or to your future career development.

Registered Social Workers are expected to complete a minimum of 20 hours of CPD each year. This is a requirement for renewing of your Annual Practising Certificate.

Types of CPD

There are many different types of CPD. Examples include courses, conferences, workshops, seminars, professional reading, research and supervision or mentoring. Activities such as staff or team meetings that are a normal part of the work of a social worker are not considered to be continuing professional development.

Keeping a record of your CPD in a log or portfolio

The Board requires that registered social workers maintain a continuous, up-to-date and accurate record of their CPD activities. In many cases employers will already have professional development processes for staff built into the annual performance planning process.  In these cases it makes sense to use effective systems that already exist rather than have a parallel system. To assist maintaining your record we offer a template that can be used or modified to suit individual learning needs if required.
